Elsemarijn Bruys (b. 1989, NL) is a visual artist with a strong interest in sensory perception. In her hybrid practice, she moves between sculpture and architectural intervention. Her starting point is always the spatial experience.
Our brain constantly receives and processes sensory impressions. Yet it is not a passive receiver of information. Rather, it actively filters what it perceives, creating a reality that is not necessarily a perfect reflection of the outside world.
The brain adapts to its environment in whatever way is easiest for it to process, highlighting certain aspects while ignoring others. This so-called “warping” helps us make sense of complex and often ambiguous sensory impressions, but it can also lead to distortions of perception.
The artist asks how we, as humans, can live in the same reality when everyone perceives it differently. For her, the world is an endless loop of distorted reflections.
